Richmond Breathe Free Sinus & Allergy Centers uses computerized tomography (CT) technology to help diagnose patients' sinus issues.

"We use computer image guidance, paired with the patient's anatomy, and I'm able to look at  their net anatomy using a probe, which is registered to their CT scan, and identify locations within the patient on the CT scan as I'm working," Richmond Breathe Free otolaryngologist Dr. John Ditto said.

The scans can be performed right at Richmond Breathe Free's office.

"We're able to do that in the office, where before (the patient) would have to go to the hospital," Ditto said. "Now, at the point of service in the  office, I can provide them with a near-complete diagnostic evaluation of their paranasal sinuses through endoscopy CT scan, (patient) history and physical exam."

A CT scan combines a series of X-ray images taken from different angles around the body and uses computer processing to create cross-sectional images (slices) of the bones, blood vessels and soft tissues inside the body, according to Mayo Clinic. CT scan images provide more-detailed information than plain X-rays.

With a CT scan, doctors can visualize almost all parts of the body to diagnose disease and plan treatment.

"During a CT scan, you're  briefly exposed to ionizing radiation," according to Mayo Clinic. "The amount of radiation is greater than you would get during a plain X-ray because the CT scan gathers more-detailed information. The low doses of radiation used in CT scans have not been shown to cause long-term harm, although at much higher doses, there may be a small increase in your potential risk of  cancer." However, CT scans have benefits that "outweigh any small potential risk."
